Anxiety Q&A

Are anxiety and anxiety disorders the same thing?

Many people use the words anxiety and anxiety disorder interchangeably, but they aren’t the same.

Anxiety

Anxiety is a feeling of intense worry, nervousness, or fear. Everyone experiences anxiety occasionally, usually because of an important or stressful event. However, if your symptoms occur regularly, you could have an anxiety disorder.

Anxiety disorder

Anxiety disorders cause persistent feelings of nervousness or worry that interfere with your life. If you have an anxiety disorder, you might have difficulty sleeping, focusing, and managing your emotions.

When should I see a doctor about anxiety?

Make an appointment at MediCalm-PA, LLC, if you regularly experience symptoms like:

  • Cold or sweaty hands
  • Nausea
  • Muscle tension
  • Shortness of breath
  • Feelings of panic or fear
  • Repeated thoughts or flashbacks of traumatic experiences
  • Uncontrollable obsessive thoughts
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Nightmares

Anxiety symptoms vary significantly from person to person. Often times getting a good night sleep can significantly improve your day time anxiety. Medical marijuana can help with sleep.  If daytime anxiety persists, there are cannabis products available used in such a way to not cause daytime intoxication.

How is anxiety diagnosed?

The diagnosis of anxiety can be determined by a clinician performing a psychological evaulation which may include questionaires. Dr. Park reviews your medical records that include your anxiety diagnosis and asks about your anxiety, including its intensity, how long it lasts, and if it’s worse at certain times, like when you’re at work or in social situations. If there are no containdications regarding the use of medical cannabis, she can certify you, if that is your desire, and instruct you on how to get started as well as possible side effects.

How is anxiety treated?

At MediCalm-PA, LLC, Dr. Park certifies people with anxiety so that they have access to medical cannabis to balance their endocannabinoid system and reduce their anxiety.  She may also suggest:

  • Relaxation techniques, like meditation and deep breathing
  • Eating a balanced, nutritious diet
  • Exercising regularly
  • Getting plenty of sleep

Some people with anxiety benefit from counseling (talk therapy). Dr. Park will refer you to a nearby mental health expert and help coordinate your treatment if needed.
