How does medical marijuana work?

Your body already makes marijuana-like chemicals that affect pain, inflammation, and many other processes. Marijuana can sometimes help those natural chemicals, called endocannabinoids, work better, according to Laura Borgett, Ph.D., of the University of Colorado. The cannabinoids found within the marijuana plant interact with your body by way of the naturally occurring cannabinoid receptors imbedded in the cell membrane throughout your body. These cannabinoid receptors can be found in your brain, liver, lungs, kidneys and your immune system. The therapeutic effect occurs when marijuana activates the cannabinoid receptor in the body.

How is medical marijuana used?

In the state of PA there are currently several of consumption. These include:

Edibles: These can be pill-form or capsules. They contain medical cannabis and are swallowed and digested. Troches are also available in the form of lozenges or gummies. RSO, Rick Simpson Oil that comes in a syringe is also available.

Extracts: Concentrated forms of marijuana that are inhaled or vaporized. Available in Vape Cartridge or by itself.

Liquids/Tinctures: Typically consumed by placing drops under your tongue. Tinctures are a form of liquid also available in sprays.

Topicals: Used to treat localized pain. Topicals are non-psychoactive and come in gels, creams, and ointments that are applied to the skin. There are also Transdermal patches available for use.

Flower: Otherwise known as dry leaf and consumed through vaporization.

Who can participate in this program?

A person with an approved serious medical condition who is a Pennsylvania resident and is certified by a doctor participating in the program.

Will MediCalm-PA, LLC be distributing medical marijuana?

No. At MediCalm-PA, LLC we will only be certifying individuals who have a qualifying condition determined by the state of PA. You will need to go to an approved dispensary to purchase your medical cannabis.

Will it be necessary for me to have a follow-up visit?

The state requires that each patient have a "bona-fide" relationship with the doctor that will be signing off on their patient certification. With that being said, each patient will be encouraged to schedule a follow up visit.

Do I need a referral from a primary care physician?

No you do not. The choice to use medical marijuana as a treatment for your qualifying condition is your decision. You do not need a referral or the permission of your primary care physician. At our appointment, we will determine whether medical marijuana is a treatment you want to pursue and how to get certified for an MMJ card in the state of PA.
